Swim Groups

The Yucaipa Swim Team offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. It is the goal of the Yucaipa Swim Team to offer age specific training for all of our athletes geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

StarFish
StarFish are beginning swimmers ages 4-10 who have had little or no previous formal swim or stoke instruction.
Training: Swimmers spend 30-45 minutes 2-3 per day per week  in the water with an assistant coach (high school age) while the Starfish head coach directs instruction from the poolside. Low coach to swimmer ratio (1 to 6, or less). Instructional focus is on floating, breathing, balance, rotation, basic freestyle and backstroke.
Goals: To learn how to swim for safety and for fun. To be able to swim, with a minimum skill level, 25 yards of backstroke and freestyle.

Level 1
Level 1 Fish are beginning swimmers ages 5-10 who have had limited swim or stroke instruction.
Training: Minimal dry land. Skills and drills are emphasized. Swimmer should try to attend a minimum of 3 practices per week.
Goals: To be able to swim all 4 strokes with a minimum skill level; increase leg strength; follow proper lane swimming, introduction to competitive swim meets

Level 2
The Level  2 Group is where our swimmers, ages 5-10 increase their competitive swimming confidence. Prospective members should be able to swim 50 yards nonstop in all 4 stokes.
Training: Minimal dry land.  Skills and drills are emphasized. Swimmers at this level should try to attend a minimum of 3-4 practices per week.
Goals: Learn all 4 strokes. Develop an understanding of basic training drills. Strengthen legs. Learn how to read the pace clock.  Be able to swim a 100IM without stopping, dive off the starting blocks, and do freestyle flip turns.

Level 3
The Level 3 Group is for swimmers ages 5-12 who have had some stroke instruction but have not yet mastered the technical basics of all four strokes. Members of this group should be able to read the pace clock and should also be able to swim, at a minimum skill level, the 100IM without stopping, dive off the starting blocks, and do freestyle flip turns.
Training: Participate in up to 30 minutes of dry-land training per practice. Work on conditioning with some drill and stoke work. Swim competitively in meets. Should attend 3-5 workouts per week.
Goals: Become proficient in all 4 strokes and the 100IM. Learn to swim drills following the pace clock. Strengthen Legs. Be able to swim a 200 IM without stopping. Develop competitive swimming skills

Level 4
The Level 4 Group is for intermediate swimmers, ages 7 to 13. Members must be able to perform adequately all four strokes and the 100IM. Must also be able to swim a 200IM.
Training: Motivated and hard working, goal oriented. Should attend 4-5 workouts per week. The more practices the better. Increased focus on conditioning. Drills and stroke work included as needed.
Goals: Develop and improve aerobic conditioning, training disciplines, and competitive goals. Be able to swim multiple 200IM’s.  Develop a desire to advance to the Advanced group.

Level 5a
The Level 5a group is for the self-motivated swimmer ages 12 to18. Members must be proficient in all four strokes, be able to complete multiple 200IM’s.
Training: Training expectations of Level 5a group members are high.  Training includes 45-60 minutes of dry-land routines per workout. Practices (including dry-land) will average 2-3 hours per session.  Swimmers should plan on attending 5 to 6 practices per week.  Focus is on conditioning with some drill and stroke work.
Goals: Strengthen all strokes and all events. Able to swim multiple 200IM’s. Strive to achieve Blue and JO times (or better) in all 4 strokes and be able to swim the 400IM.  Be on time.  Race Senior fish in workouts.

Level 5b
The Level 5b Group is for the self-motivated swimmer ages 12 to18. Members must be proficient in all four strokes, be able to complete multiple 200IM’s.
Training: Training expectations of Junior Fish group members are high.  Training includes 45-60 minutes of dry-land routines per workout. Practices (including dry-land) will average 2-3 hours per session.  Swimmers should plan on attending 5 to 6 practices per week.  Focus is on conditioning with some drill and stroke work.
Goals: Strengthen all strokes and all events. Able to swim multiple 200IM’s. Strive to achieve Blue and JO times (or better) in all 4 strokes and be able to swim the 400IM.  Be on time.  Race Senior fish in workouts.

Masters Level: Big Fish
Open to all Adults (ages: typically 20 and over).
Training: Swim 5:00AM-6:30AM M-F and occasional Saturday workouts (when scheduled). PM workouts are only available when/if there is enough room to accommodate both groups (age groups swimmers gets priority) and if the master swimmer has been pre-approved for PM swimming by the YST head coach.
Goals: Set by each swimmer. May include such goals as: cardiovascular conditioning, weight loss, toning, improving technique, competing in USA or Masters Meets (when available)
